Sorrento peninsula


The Sorrentine Peninsula or Sorrento Peninsula is a peninsula located in southern Italy that separates the Gulf of Naples to the north from the Gulf of Salerno to the south. The peninsula is named after its main town, Sorrento, which is located on the north (Gulf of Naples) coast. The Amalfi Coast is located on the southern side. The Lattari Mountains form the geographical backbone of the peninsula. The island of Capri lies off the western tip of the peninsula in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The whole area is an important destination for tourism.

Being one of the Italian jewels Sorrento has been among the best touristic destinations since XVIII century. It has Greek origins and it was an important touristic venue at Roman times, as witnessed by ruins of the several residences, among which Villa of Pollio Felice.
The historical center worths a visit, its urbanity plan resembles the ancient Roman street connections. Located on a splendid natural terrace overlooking the sea, one of the few elegant, in the centre of the Peninsula which has got its name, Sorrento boasts a wide variety of colors and views. The touristc inclination of Sorrento developed in the XVIII century when the town entered in the Grand Tour, the journey that all European aristocratic young men had to make to the most important places in Italy to fulfill their cultural, historical and literary formation.
It is worth considering places such as the XIII century Cloister of San Francis with Roman time columns; Correale Museum and from its garden you can enjoy a wonderful view on the Gulf of Naples, the Cathedral and its Bell Tower; The Ancient Walls; the characteristic S. Cesareo Street, full with shops.
From Hotel Sporting Sorrento is reachable by car (about 10 kms)or easily seated in a Circumvesuviana train in only 10 minutes.

Capri


Capri is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the world. At the very beginning it was part of Sorrento Peninsula, but later it was partly submerged by the sea and then separated from the mainland, where now there is the channel of Bocca Piccola. The island emerges from deep sea; its coast has got calcareous rock in many points of the cliff, it has got wonderful grottos, the most famous is the Blue Grotto. The Faraglioni Rocks are typical of Capri, they are small rocky cliffy isles, not far from the shore creating a scenic and landscape effect. Each year the blue Capri sea is visited by the biggest yachts of the world and its famous Piazzetta, with its cafès, is the established destination for whoever gets to the island. To get to Capri you need to get to Sorrento ort to board on the hydrofoils leaving each 30 minutes. As an alternative we can organize private excursions on boat with sailor directly in hotel.

Pompeii


The archeological site of Pompeii, located on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, is a golden attraction for tourists in Campania. Pompeii fascinates from an artistic, historical point of view, it is a unique place in the world and there you can recreate, step by step, the daily life of the inhabitants of a town which the Vesuvius eruption has made immortal. In 1997 UNESCO declared Pompeii World Heritage Site. Actually Pompeii is the only Roman town which survived untouched: you don’t need to “imagine or recreate” looking at well preserved ruins, you only need to look. The unexpected rain of ashes and lapillus and the following cloud of dust have crystallized the whole town and its tragedy, protecting it in the centuries. The ruins of the Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, buried under 79 AD Vesuvius eruption, offer an incomparable scene of the classical world society and daily life, a witness preserved for more than 2000 years. Pompeii is easy reachable by Circumvesuviana trains which runs every 30 minutes and in 15 minutes leave you right outside the archeological site main entrance.

Vesuvius


Vesuvius is an explosive volcano in a state of dormancy since 1944, It is 1250m. high and it is located on the east coast of the province of Naples. It has become famous since 79 AD eruption which destroyed Pompeii, and nowadays it is a wonderful natural park. It is an interesting volcano because of its history and the frequency of its eruptions. It represent a magnificent view in the gulf and it has a world record, that is to be the first volcano which has undergone systematically studies. A long walk will take you up to the top. Reaching the mouth of the volcano you will enjoy a wonderful view of the Gulf of Naples. To get to the Vesuvius from Hotel Sporting it is necessary to catch the local Circumvesuviana train up to Herculaneum stop and from here a bus of the Herculaneum – Vesuvius line.

Amalfi coast


Amalfi Coast is a coast line of 50 kms, located on the coast overlooking the Gulf of Salerno and famous all over the world for its naturalistic beauty. It takes its name from the town of Amalfi, ancient maritime Republic, centre of the coast not only from a geographical point of view, but even historical. Other touristic places are Conca dei Marini, Maiori, Minori, Praiano, Ravello and Vietri sul Mare. The spots of Amalfi Coast are world famous also for the ceramic tradition. Apart from Amalfi, among all the other most visited area of the coast is Positano, little village endorsed on the rock, full of narrow roads and steps which follow its position, with a prevalence oriental architecture as witnessed from the houses with dome roof. Amalfi coast can be easily reached from Vico Equense by car or scooter. In alternative you can reach Circumvesuviana railway station in Sorrento where several Sita buses leaves to the Coast.

Naples


Naples is one of the oldest Mediterranean city, rich of history, art and nature, located at the center of one of the most beautiful gulf in the world. Visiting the historic center of Naples, the largest one in Europe, means going through twenty centuries of history and admiring overlapping architectural styles. Among the monuments not to be missed there are Castel dell’Ovo, Palazzo Reale, Piazza del Plebiscito, Galleria Umberto I, church of S. Chiara, church of S. Lorenzo Maggiore, San Gregorio Armeno and Underground Naples. The city of Naples can be reached from Vico Equense in about 50 minutes by car or train.
